Green Valley's award winning school newspaper, The InvestiGator, won Best Newspaper for the eighth consecutive year at the Las Vegas Review Journal's annual High School Journalism Awards Banquet on May 27, at the Suncoast. Individual winners included Jordan Coburn for Best Sports News and Best Feature stories; Jacky Becker for Best Sports Page Design; Moriah Hernandez for Best Serious Opinion; and Jennifer Bateau for Best Editorial Cartoon. The staff took home 17 awards overall, including placing third place for their new website. The InvestiGator is advised by English instructor Eric Johnston.

In the process of taking 1st place, the ForensiGators qualified 15 students for the national tournament in Dallas, Texas, June 13-18. Recognizing and Dealing with Harassment School Board Trustee Deanna Wright invites parents to attend A-Team meetingBullying/cyberbullying has taken center stage in the national media. Since keeping our children safe is a top priority, we must do everything we can to teach our students not to engage in harassment and to give parents preventive tools to recognize and deal with these issues. A special evening A-TEAM meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, 6:30 p.m., at Bob Miller Middle School, to address harassment, including bullying and cyberbullyhing. Clark County School District Police will discuss what harassment is, share stories of harassment, the impact that it has, and how to recognize it. In addition, Mr. Scott Hensley, Library Media Specialist, will discuss how we can help students "Be Kind" to each other and stand up for each other, as well as how parents can advocate for their students. Jason is the first student from Nevada to compete in this tournament, which is hosted by Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. The school, established in 1867, has invited just 16 extemporaneous speakers from "distinguished and respected schools from around the country." Congratulations to Emily GarySenior women's soccer player Emily Gary has been named the 2010-11 Scholar All-Western Region team by Adidas and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. This honor is reserved for players who have made a substantial impact on the field for their teams and excelled academically by having a 4.0 or higher weighted GPA and a 3.8 or higher un-weighted GPS. Emily is the only player from the state of Nevada and one of only 18 players in the Western Region to be honored with this award. The selection process list is overseen by a team from the acclaimed National Center for Hospitality Studies at Sullivan University. 2010 CCSD Excellence in EducationCongratulations to English instructor Christa Fialkiewicz for her induction as an outstanding educator into the 2010 CCSD Excellence in Education Hall of Fame. She was one of 10 nominees chosen from 50 applicants for her numerous contributions and dedication to the educational profession. Congratulations to the Yearbook Staff2010 Legacy yearbook was awarded Top Ten Best of Show at the national JEA convention in Kansas City. Marching Band and Symphony Orchestra heading to New York CityThe Green Valley High School Marching Band, under the direction of Diane Koutsulis, will travel to New York on Nov. 23rd to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They were one of eight high school bands selected in the country for this prestigious honor. In addition, the Green Valley Symphonic Band, directed by Ms. Koutsulis, and the Symphony Orchestra, directed by Shelly Burger, were also invited to perform in a concert at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 28. Congratulations to the Women's Volleyball TeamGVHS Women’s Volleyball team captured its second straight Sunrise Region Championship by defeating Silverado. The team will now head to Reno on November 12th and 13th to compete for the State Championship. PAALS Meeting at UNLVThe ASC 2 PAALs (Parents As Academic Leaders) Meeting will be held at UNLV on November 17, from 8:30 to 11:30. Members of UNLV staff and students will present information about the opportunities offered by the university. The group will meet in the Student Union on the UNLV campus. For those who need transportation, we will have two vans. One will leave at 8:00 a.m. from Wengert ES (2001 Winterwood Blvd, 799-8600 ) and one will leave at 8:00 a.m. from the Area 2 Service Center (5708 Mountain Vista St.). Congratulations to the Women's Golf TeamThe Green Valley Gators Women's Golf team and Coached Murphy capped off a perfect season with a record setting performance with a 90 stokes victory at the Nevada State Championships. The team was lead by Individual State Champion Alex Kaui who set the lowest two day total in state history by shooting an eight under par for the 36 hole championship.
